The beautiful Instantograph series cameras were manufactured by J. Lancaster & Sons of Birmingham, England from 1886-1910. In 1898, the company was the largest camera manufacturer in the world, with over 200,000 cameras made.
J. Lancaster was known for its wooden view cameras, for making its own lenses, and for the patents it held on shutter mechanisms. After 1910, wet plate photography declined, and J. Lancaster's business declined as well, until it ceased operations in 1955.
The Instantograph is remembered for its beautiful brass bindings, the many years it lasted on the market and of course its fantastic name.
The camera we've memorialized with this design is the 1893 model (1/4 plate), one of the earlier iterations of this gorgeous camera.
